Savamala

Savamala is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Serbia’s capital Belgrade. It is located between Kalemegdan Fortress and new city quarter - Belgrade Waterfront, right on the banks of Sava River. Urbanization of Savamala begun in 19th century when it already was village with more than one hundred households. It represents old town spirit and architecture of that time. At the beginning of 20th century this part of the town became main city port. After the Second world war city port was removed to another location and this part of the city became industrial quarter. In the late 90s Savamala was in very bad condition, a lot of companies went bankrupt and a lot of buildings were abandoned. Today this small quarter represents only remaining of what Savamala looked like. It is endangered by big projects and greedy investors.
