History of the spanish house
The Spanish House is a half-demolished building in the Savamala district. At the time it was built, it was one of the most representative buildings in this part of the city, and at the beginning of the 21st century, it became one of its symbols. It is located at No. 2 at the Braće Krsmanović street, which is interesting by itself because it is one of the rare streets that has not changed its look for more than one hundred years.
The Spanish house was built around 1880 as a palace with a basement, ground floor and first floor. It was designed in the spirit of academic architecture of the 19th century. At the time the building was erected, it was one of the most representative buildings in this part of the city. It was used for the needs of the Belgrade Port as a customs house, and later as a warehouse, and it was also used by the Serbian Shipping Company. After the First World War, the Museum of River Shipping was housed in the facility. Name of the house actually doesn’t have any connections with Spain but rather with disease. During the Spanish Flu Pandemic sick people stayed in this house for quarantine. After that name just stuck with the house for more than century.
House changed several owners and tenants in the last 20 years and there was several revival projects but non of them were ever realized. Today house only has basement and walls and awaits for new project or demolition.
